As we dance together, we weave and wrap, connected on many levels. Not just during a particular dance, but over the course of years, we become interwoven--our stories, movement, challenges--intersect for a time, and are linked. Dancing is weaving.
Weaving, like music and dance, has elements of rhythm, melody, and harmony. Rhythm is in the pattern or repeats of color (or, perhaps in the lack of pattern repeats--maybe the weaving is one color, like a monotone, in a simple weave structure). Rhythm is also in the act of weaving itself: throw the shuttle, beat the weft, throw the shuttle, etc. Melody is in the use of colors--some are highlighted or accented and create a kind of melodic or logical flow--different colors act as various melodic voices relating and commenting upon each other. Harmony is in the balance of color, pattern, structure--some colors may support others in harmony, contrast, and balance. In weaving, as in music, there can be found moments of dissonance as well as consonance--tension as well as resolution. Layers of color, texture, shape, and design coordinate to have a musical quality: in this way, weaving is music/weaving is dancing.
